Onida Mobile Phone

Onida will soon launch mobile hands sets under its brand name, in addition to the existing brands on the company. Sources in the industry said that the Mumbai-based company is all set to start with nearly half a dozen basic models ranging from Rs 1,500 and Rs 8,000. The company is said to have started manufacturing mobile phones at their Wada-based manufacturing facility. The design center for mobile phones is also at Wada near Mumbai. The company is planning to invest Rs 15-20 crore in launching new marketing initiatives for Onida branded mobile phones. A senior official of the company informed on condition of anonymity that initially the company would start leveraging the marketing route of Onida consumer electronics for mobile phones as well.

But afterwards they will adopt a different go-to-market strategy all together. "Mobile handsets and consumer electronics are two very different things. We have to find new dealers to push our products in future. The marketing strategy would have to intense as the competition is very tough in the segment" the source added. Taking a cue from the strategy of existing set of mobile players, Onida is also contemplating on aligning itself with premium retail stores, apart from malls to push Onida mobile phones in the country.

The company manufactures color televisions, washing machines, air conditioners and DVD players.

Google Phone - GPhone

Myth has turned to reality as Google has continued discussions with various cell phone carriers regarding sale of their custom designed cell phone including a new browser and integration with many of Google's popular online applications. The designs include a still and video camera, wireless connectivity, a full QWERTY keyboard and possibly GPS. Google hopes that advertising will offset the service costs, allowing subscribers to use the phone for free.

If done right, the Gphone and not the iPhone will be the one to change the face of the wireless industry.

Apple’s iPhone, at least in its initial release, has not upended the wireless industry, particularly in the United States, as much as hoped. The iPhone certainly has pushed the cell phone envelope a bit further, and it hints at what’s to come, but so far the iPhone is still playing by the rules.

Google, if it enters the fray as expected with its so-called Gphone, may truly rewrite the rules. What it plans to do is an ongoing topic of discussion and speculation on the Internet, not unlike Apple’s plans for the iPhone before its release at the end of June. The Gphone may be announced as early as next week and may debut as early as the first quarter of 2008. The anticipation will be as fervent as it was for the iPhone, without the Steve Jobs showmanship.

So what will be Gphone be?

If done right, the Gphone will change the wireless industry, at least in the U.S. If not done right, the Gphone will be just another cell phone with some advanced features.
